GRADE 3 Special Events and Activities for Students and Teachers

  • Community Service Project: (held at the end of October)
    • Snack and Bake Sale for the Francis Wyman community
    • Proceeds benefit the Burlington Food Pantry
    • Third grade students raised $659.00 in Oct. 2006
  • Introduction to MCAS:
    • Formal instruction begins in January
    • Ice cream party held for students at the end of MCAS testing
  • "WEE DELIVER": (held at the beginning of Feb. for 2 weeks and ends on Valentine's Day)
    • Third Grade students operate the F.W. postal service
    • Focus is on learning how to write friendly letters using appropriate formats, addressing envelopes, and correct correspondence
    • Children learn how the postal system works in collecting, sorting, stamping and delivering mail to the F.W. school community
  • Cursive and multiplication
  • Spring Concert: (held at the end of April)
    • Students perform a variety of vocal selections incorporating musical themes and techniques learned throughout the year for F.W. community, families and friends
  • Social Studies Curriculum: Study of MA state symbols, early American history focusing on the Wampanoag Indian and Pilgrim life, Colonists, Revolutionary War, Industrial Revolution in Lowell and biographies of famous people from Massachusetts
  • FIELD TRIPS linked to the Social Studies and Science curriculum enhance and expand the student's understanding of MA
    • (October) Commonwealth Museum, Boston- state symbols and artifacts discovered during the "Big Dig"
    • (November) Plimoth Plantation, Plymouth- Wampanoag and Pilgrim life
    • (December) North Shore Music Theater- introduction to musical drama
    • (April) MinuteMan National Park, Lexington- Revolutionary War
    • (May) Burlington Reservoir- habitats, plant, animal life in our community
    • (June) Boott Mills, Lowell- Industrial Revolution
  • Special presentations by the BURLINGTON SCIENCE CENTER which expand on grade level curriculum standards: (scheduled by grade level teachers throughout the year)
    • Geode Splitting (Rocks & Minerals)
    • Static Electricity using the Van de Graff generator
    • Habitats I Animal presentation - understanding adaptations
    • Birds of prey
